Laura Simms
Laura Simms is an internationally known storyteller of great power and wisdom. She tells tales from many cultures and in many settings.
As a teller of Hasidic stories, Laura describes herself this way :
I began telling Hasidic stories in 1968 when I began telling stories.
It was natural since I grew up in an Eastern European family rooted in
the tradition, in a Hasidic neighborhood - Borough Park. My great
grandfather on my mother's side from Dorohoi in Romania was the grand
rabbi of Moldavia. My grandmother on my father's side, who was quite
modest and magical, and knew ten languages, came from a very famous
Rabbinical family.
I mainly tell stories that I hear orally; ones that
defy logic, grapple with the nature of spirituality, the attainment of
wisdom, and how one can expand one's heart to contain a greater
compassion.
I fell in love with stories of the Baal Shem Tov when I was
growing up and my father said, in the master's name, "take off your
shoes you are standing on holy ground."
